SHIMLA: The BJP chose not to name a chief ministerial candidate in the last six state elections, including in Uttar Pradesh, but made an exception in Himachal Pradesh, announcing that Prem Kumar Dhumal, 73, will be chief minister if the party comes to power. The hill state votes tomorrow for a new government.
Former prime minister and senior Congress leader Manmohan Singh today said the Centre's bullet train project is an "exercise in vanity", accusing the BJP-led government of "misplaced priorities." He said it should have focused on improving the existing passenger rail network.

People in Delhi may have to pay four times the usual parking fees with a Supreme Court-appointed panel recommending emergency measures to tackle severe pollution levels. The decision to hike parking charges was taken at a meeting of the Supreme Court-appointed Environment Pollution Prevention and Control Authority (EPCA) to discourage people from using private vehicles over rising pollution in Delhi-NCR (National Capital Region).

A day after a senior journalist was arrested from his home near Delhi after being accused by a Chhattisgarh minister of blackmailing him, the police have filed an FIR against the state's Congress chief over a complaint by the minister. Minister Rajesh Munat had filed the complaint against Chhattisgarh Congress chief Bhupesh Baghel after Mr Baghel said he possessed a copy of a sex CD purportedly featuring the minister. Mr Munat has called the CD "fake" and said it can be investigated by any agency.
Dineshwar Sharma, the centre's interlocutor for Kashmir who has spoken about radicalisation of the youth there as his big challenge, says he was worried that if radicalisation picks up, "the situation will be like Yemen, Syria and Libya" and "finish the Kashmir society itself". "So, it is very important that everybody, all of us, contribute so that suffering of Kashmiris end," Mr Sharma told news agency Indo-Asian News Service.
