New Delhi, Aug 13 : The Supreme Court today directed the Meerut inspector general of police (IGP) to investigate the alleged Hapur lynching case, in which one person was killed and another brutally assaulted by a mob on the pretext they were involved in cow-slaughter, and file a report within two weeks. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra also issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh government on the plea filed by Samiuddin, who was allegedly brutally assaulted by the mob in the incident, seeking an independent SIT probe into the incident and transfer of investigation and the subsequent trial outside the state.

New Delhi : As many as 774 people have died in incidents related to floods and rains in seven states during the monsoon season so far, the Home Ministry said. According to the Home Ministry's National Emergency Response Centre (NERC), 187 people have lost their lives in Kerala, 171 in Uttar Pradesh, 170 in West Bengal and 139 in Maharashtra due to the floods and rains.
Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 13 : Two more Kerala priests, accused of sexually abusing a woman, surrendered before police today, officials said. Fr Abraham Varghese alias Sony surrendered before a court at Thiruvalla while Fr Jaise K George at the crime branch office in Kollam this morning, the police said. The clergymen surrendered after the Supreme Court cancelled their interim protection from the arrest and asked them to surrender by today. A bench of Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan had said the two priests were at liberty to seek regular bail once they surrendered.
Kolkata, Aug 13 : Former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee passed away at a private hospital here this morning following multiple organ failure, a senior hospital official said. He was 89 and survived by wife and two daughters. Chatterjee passed away at around 8.15 am after his condition deteriorated following yesterday's "mild heart attack", the official said. Chatterjee was suffering from a kidney-related ailment and was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition on Tuesday last.
Lucknow, Aug 13 : Taking a jibe at BJP chief Amit Shah's claim that the saffron party will win 73-plus of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh in 2019, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav said today the BJP was saying this as the shaping up of opposition unity had frightened it. "Samajwadi people are ready (for the Lok Sabha elections). What is our strategy, we will not disclose. But its implementation has begun and see their condition," Yadav told reporters here today.

New Delhi, Aug 12 : The Congress today cited documentary evidence to allege that BJP president and Rajya Sabha MP Amit Shah had concealed his liabilities in the election affidavit filed on July 24 last year at the time of his election to the upper house. Senior Congress leader and former minister Jairam Ramesh alleged a new scam by Shah’s son Jay, asking how the latter’s small worth company got hefty loans from private and cooperative banks in Gujarat. The Congress had earlier accused Jay of corrupt dealings through Temple Enterprises, a now-closed firm that had posted “magical profits” soon after the BJP came to power at the centre.
